Transmission Diagnostic & Inspection

Why Diagnosis Matters
Transmission problems are expensive. That's why diagnosis is critical. The difference between a clutch seal leak and a complete rebuild can be $500 vs. $4,500. We diagnose the real problem so you can make an informed decision about repair.
A good diagnostic saves you money. A bad one costs you thousands.
Our Transmission Diagnostic Process
Computerized Scan for Trouble Codes
We connect to your vehicle's onboard diagnostic system and pull trouble codes (P0700, P0755, etc.). These codes tell us which solenoid, sensor, or system is not responding correctly. Most modern transmission problems leave digital breadcrumbs — we follow them.
Fluid Analysis
We extract a sample of your transmission fluid and examine it. What color is it? What does it smell like? Are there metal shavings (indicating wear) or sludge (indicating overheating)? Is the fluid thick, thin, or burnt? Fluid analysis reveals the transmission's internal health.
Visual Inspection
We inspect the transmission pan, filter, and connectors for signs of leak, damage, or contamination. We check the engine for oil leaks that might contaminate the transmission. We inspect cooler lines and radiator for blockage or damage.
Road Test
We drive your vehicle and feel the transmission's behavior: Does it shift smoothly? Is there hesitation? Flare? Harsh engagement? Does the transmission slip under load? Does it overheat? This road test confirms what the instruments tell us and reveals issues that don't leave diagnostic codes.
Hydraulic Pressure Test
For complex problems, we connect a pressure gauge to the transmission and monitor line pressure in each gear. This tells us if the pump is weak, if a solenoid is stuck, or if internal wear is affecting pressure. Pressure testing is the last-mile diagnostic tool for hard-to-diagnose issues.
Common Transmission Symptoms We Diagnose
Transmission Slipping — engine revs but vehicle doesn't accelerate. Indicates worn clutch packs (automatic) or failing solenoids (CVT).
Hard Shifting — clunky transition between gears. Could be worn engine mounts, solenoid stuck, or low fluid.
Delayed Engagement — wait 2–3 seconds for transmission to catch into drive or reverse. Indicates low fluid, worn pump, or internal leak.
Transmission Warning Light — indicates trouble code stored. Don't ignore it.
Transmission Fluid Leak — red or brown spots under vehicle. Seal failure, cracked pan, or loose connector.
Strange Noises — grinding, whining, or clunking from transmission. Could be worn gears, bad bearings, or pump cavitation.
Burning Smell — overheated fluid breaking down. Indicates cooling failure or high-pressure issue.
What Happens After Diagnosis
Clear Report of Findings
We provide a written report with test results, photos if applicable, and a clear explanation of what we found. No jargon. No surprises.
Honest Recommendation
Based on diagnosis, we recommend repair, rebuild, or replacement. We explain why. We tell you the pros and cons of each option.
Upfront Quote Before Any Work
Once you approve the recommendation, we provide a detailed quote for parts and labor. You know the cost before we start.
Your Choice
You decide whether to move forward. If you want a second opinion, we're fine with that. If you want to try a repair at another shop first, that's your call. We don't pressure. We diagnose.
No-Pressure Diagnosis — We Diagnose First, Then You Decide
Too many shops diagnose and immediately sell. We don't. We diagnose, explain, and let you decide. Some customers choose to get a second opinion. Some choose to drive the vehicle for a while longer. Some choose repair now. We respect all those choices.
Our goal is to give you the information you need to make the right decision for your situation. Not the decision that's right for us.
Why DOT Transmissions for Transmission Diagnostics
We've been diagnosing transmissions since 1978. We've invested in the tools — computerized scan equipment, pressure test gauges, fluid analysis capability. We've invested in the training — ATRA certification is a commitment to staying current with every transmission technology on the road. And we've invested in the ethics — we diagnose what needs fixing, not what makes us the most money.
Transmission Diagnostic & Inspection
Don't guess. Don't assume. Don't let someone sell you a $5,000 rebuild when a $300 repair is all you need. We diagnose first. Then you decide.
“…I trusted that he would repair everything properly and for a fair price.”
Boris and Sandra were both a pleasure to work with! Both such kind people, Boris is also very knowledgeable and such an honest soul. As someone who doesn’t know too much about cars I trusted that he would repair everything properly and for a fair price. Very happy I was referred here for my transmission!
