What Is a Transfer Case?

A transfer case splits power from your transmission between the front and rear axles in 4WD and AWD vehicles. In 2WD mode, power goes rear-only (lighter, more fuel-efficient). Engage 4WD or shift to AWD, and the transfer case distributes torque front and rear for maximum traction. In Edmonton winters, a working transfer case is the difference between confident traction on ice and dangerous wheel spin. It's not a luxury—it's essential infrastructure.

Common Transfer Case Issues

Grinding When Engaging 4WD: You shift the lever or dial, but instead of smooth engagement, you hear grinding. This signals worn gears, a damaged viscous coupling, or internal wear.

Fluid Leaks: Dark oil pooling under the vehicle near the transfer case means seal failure. Ignore it, and the transfer case will overheat and lock up.

Difficulty Shifting Between 2WD & 4WD: The lever is hard to move, or you can't engage 4WD at all. Can be electrical (failed actuator) or mechanical (internal wear).

Vibration: Shake in the drivetrain while in 4WD, especially around 60–80 km/h. Can indicate worn gears, bearings, or u-joints.

4WD Warning Light: Modern transfer cases have electronic sensors. A light on the dash means your system has detected a problem.

Our Transfer Case Services

Fluid Service & Top-Up: Replace old, degraded fluid with fresh oil and filter. Often catches problems early.

Seal & Gasket Replacement: Stop leaks at the seams. We replace input shaft seals, output shaft seals, and case gaskets.

Chain Replacement: The internal chain that synchronizes power distribution wears over time. We replace it and adjust tension.

Full Rebuild: Disassemble, inspect, replace all wear components, reassemble, test in 2WD and 4WD, and deliver with confidence.

Electronic Actuator Repair: Modern transfer cases use electronic solenoids to engage 4WD. We diagnose and replace failed actuators.

Why Edmonton Drivers Can't Afford Transfer Case Failure

January in Edmonton is unforgiving. You're 50 km out of the city on a highway, temperature at -35°C, ice everywhere. You need 4WD. If your transfer case fails now, you're not getting home without a tow truck—and tow trucks are booked solid during cold snaps. The difference between a $300 fluid service and a $3,000 rebuild is usually caught months earlier with regular inspection. We recommend annual transfer case checks in fall, before winter hits.

Boris and Sandra were both a pleasure to work with! Both such kind people, Boris is also very knowledgeable and such an honest soul. As someone who doesn’t know too much about cars I trusted that he would repair everything properly and for a fair price. Very happy I was referred here for my transmission!
