What Is a CVT Transmission?
CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. Instead of fixed gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), a CVT uses two pulleys connected by a belt or chain. The pulleys change diameter continuously, providing an infinite range of gear ratios without discrete gear shifts.
This design makes CVTs smoother and more fuel-efficient than traditional automatics. But it also makes them mechanically different. The belt, the pulleys, the electronic controllers — these are specific to CVTs. A technician competent with traditional automatics may not understand CVTs at all.
CVT Vehicles We Service
● Nissan Rogue, Sentra, Altima, Versa, Qashqai
● Honda Civic, CR-V, Accord, HR-V, Fit
● Subaru Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy, Crosstrek
● Toyota Corolla, RAV4 (some years), CH-R
● Mitsubishi Outlander, Mirage, Lancer
Common CVT Problems We Diagnose and Fix
Shuddering — a vibration or jerking feeling, especially during acceleration or low-speed driving. Common in high-mileage CVTs; usually caused by belt wear or pulley deterioration.
Overheating — transmission temperature warning light comes on; fluid turns dark brown or burns-smelling. Usually caused by fluid breakdown or internal friction.
Belt or chain wear — noise from the transmission; loss of power or hesitation during acceleration.
Solenoid failures — transmission stuck in one gear, or erratic shifting. Solenoids control pulley pressure; when they fail, transmission loses its variability.
Fluid degradation — Edmonton winters and stop-and-go driving break down CVT fluid faster than other transmission types. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid reduces lubrication and increases wear.
Delayed engagement — transmission slow to catch into drive or reverse. Can indicate internal slipping or low fluid pressure.
Why CVTs Need Specialist Attention
Not all transmission shops are CVT shops. General technicians often refuse CVT work because:
The diagnostic equipment is different — CVTs require specialized scan tools to read pulley pressure, solenoid feedback, and belt tension.
Repair procedures are different — belt replacement, pulley service, and solenoid work require CVT-specific knowledge.
Parts and fluid are proprietary — using the wrong fluid or belt kills a CVT quickly.
DOT Transmissions has invested in the expertise and tools to handle CVTs properly. We've been adapting to transmission technology for 45+ years — and we're not stopping now.
Our CVT Services
CVT Repair — solenoid replacement, seal service, belt inspection and replacement, pulley restoration. We diagnose the root cause and fix it without unnecessary work.
CVT Fluid Service — transmission fluid replacement with factory-spec fluid. This is critical for CVT longevity; many CVT failures start with fluid breakdown.
CVT Rebuild — complete teardown, inspection of belt, pulleys, and all internal components. New belt, seals, and solenoids. Reassembled to OEM spec.
CVT Maintenance Tips
CVTs are sensitive to maintenance. Small oversights lead to big problems.
Change the transmission fluid every 60,000–100,000 km with CVT-specific fluid. Don't guess on fluid type — wrong fluid causes slipping and overheating.
Avoid towing with a CVT unless the vehicle is rated for it. CVTs don't handle sustained load like traditional transmissions.
Avoid aggressive driving and hard acceleration. CVT belts wear faster under stress.
In Edmonton winters, warm up the vehicle before driving hard. Cold CVT fluid is thick and slow to cool the belt and pulleys.
Watch for symptoms early. Shuddering, hesitation, or a burning smell — bring it in immediately.
Why DOT for CVT Service
We've been in business since 1978, and we've adapted to every transmission evolution — from early manuals to modern CVTs. We're ATRA-certified (the gold standard for transmission expertise) and CAA Approved. We invest in the tools and training to handle CVTs correctly. And we stand behind our work with 3–6 month warranties.

“…I trusted that he would repair everything properly and for a fair price.”
Boris and Sandra were both a pleasure to work with! Both such kind people, Boris is also very knowledgeable and such an honest soul. As someone who doesn’t know too much about cars I trusted that he would repair everything properly and for a fair price. Very happy I was referred here for my transmission!
